Work Experience

Find out what it’s like to work for us on a short-term basis and see if a career in transport is right for you. You’ll get involved with tasks and activities that will help you learn and build your skillset. You’ll also gain practical experience by applying what you’ve learnt in real life situations.

It’s an opportunity to get your career off to a flying start.

How do I apply?

First, you’ll need to complete our online work experience programme using a platform called Springpod. We’ve partnered with them to create an exciting, interactive programme open to people aged 13 and above.

What to expect

  • You can enrol at any time.
  • Completing it takes approximately 7 hours - you can do it at your own pace.
  • You’ll learn about transport and our mission to change the way Wales travels.
  • You’ll discover the different careers open to you at TfW.
  • It’s interactive - with activities, quizzes and handy tips from our colleagues.
  • You’ll get a certificate you can add to your LinkedIn profile or CV.

Work Experience

What about in-person work experience?

Once you’ve completed our virtual work experience programme and we’ve received your certificate, we’ll consider an in-person placement in an area of your choosing. It will last 1-2 weeks.

Completing our online work experience programme isn’t a guarantee of an in-person placement. We’ll do our best to accommodate your request.

We offer work experience in many of our teams, including:

  • HR
  • Finance
  • Engineering
  • Sustainability
  • Transport planning
  • Stations

We can’t offer placements in train driving or conducting because of the safety-critical nature of these roles. There could also be age requirements for some roles because of health and safety.

Safety, supervision and safeguarding

Your safety is our top priority. All in-person placements are fully supervised, follow our safeguarding policies and include inductions and safety briefings
